Donald Byrd - Stepping Into Tomorrow: Tracklist (Vinyl) A1: Stepping Into Tomorrow: A2: Design A Nation: A3: We're Together: A4: Think Twice: * Items below may differ depending on the release. Review If only all "sellout" jazz albums were this cool. The title track recasts Pam Grier in the slinky sci-fi.

When Stepping Into Tomorrow was released in Donald Byrd found himself in the middle of an impressive run of consistent albums that practically created a new sub-genre of jazz funk music, one that seamlessly combined elements of jazz, funk, soul and R&B, and all of which were nearly uniformly despised by those critics and listeners who were still holding out hope for a return to the golden.

Donald Byrd was considered one of the finest hard bop trumpeters of the post-Clifford Brown era. He recorded prolifically as both a leader and sideman from the mid-’50s into the mid-’60s, most often for Blue Note, where he established a reputation as a solid stylist with a clean tone, clear articulation, and a knack for melodicism.

The trumpeter wasn't a singles artist; he was an album artist whose Black Byrd, Street Lady, Stepping Into Tomorrow, and Places and Spaces were big-selling LPs. Many of Byrd's better-known tracks were produced by songwriting duo Larry and Fonce Mizell, whose credits include LTD and A Taste of Honey. On Donald Byrd's Best, you'll find the 4/

Donald Byrd finally saw the light of day (on vinyl) in It was recorded when jazz-fusion was getting ready to make a HUGE splash on the scene. Byrd, himself, blamed Blue Note for not releasing it at the time. He stated, "We were already experimenting in so-called fusion before anyone else. If it didn't get out there ahead of the others,/5(16).
